Rob McElhenney, one of the investors in the group to purchase a stake in Alpine this week, has tweeted say “hello” to the world of Formula 1.

The actor, best known for his creation of and long-running role as ‘Mac’ on American sitcomIt’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, has hit new heights of fame away from the screen in recent years for his purchase and co-ownership of lower league football team, Wrexham AFC, along with fellow Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds.

The docuseries following their takeover of the club proved hugely successful, with the second series documenting the club’s long-awaited promotion back to the Football League set to hit screens in the coming months.

McElhenney, along with Reynolds and fellow actor Michael B. Jordan, are a part of a wider consortium to have purchased a 24% stake in the Alpine team, which will add €200m [£171m] of investment to the team.

Reynolds himself acknowledged the news on social media by ‘liking’ Formula 1’s tweet announcing his newfound involvement in the sport, while friend and business partner McElhenney teased he may be attending a race soon by tweeting: “Oh hello @f1… See you soon :)”

Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi said of the investment when it was announced: “This association is an important step to enhance our performance at all levels.

“First, Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners and Maximum Effort Investments, as international players with strong track record in the sports industry, will bring their recognised expertise to boost our media and marketing strategy, essential to support our sporting performance over the long term.

“Second, the incremental revenue generated will in turn be reinvested in the team, in order to further accelerate our Mountain Climber plan, aimed at catching up with top teams in terms of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.”
