Mick Schumacher delivers unintended dig to former team boss Guenther Steiner

Said by all to be one of the nicest chaps you could ever meet, Mick Schumacher was quick to clarify his thoughts after landing an unintentional dig at Guenther Steiner on the Silverstone stage.

From Schumacher’s side, though, there wasn’t a negative word to be heard – at least nothing that ever reached the media.

So it’s no wonder that when he unintentionally insulted his former team boss while being interviewed on the Silverstone stage, he was quick to backtrack.

Asked what it’s like chatting with his new team boss Toto Wolff during races, the 24-year-old replied: “Toto’s great, he’s a great team principal. He’s probably the best one that I’ve worked with so far.”

That drew a few oohs and laughter from the crowd with Schumacher quick to add: “I didn’t mean it that way! No, he’s a great person.”

Schumacher, who recently tested for McLaren on top of his Mercedes reserve driver and simulator duties, is eyeing a return to the grid next season. His chances, though, aren’t looking good.

According to Wolff: “It’s a difficult situation because the cockpits are taken with us even though I wish Mick would get a seat, he would have deserved it.

“The situation in 2024 is so unfavourable.

“In 2025 a few doors will open again. We’ll have to wait and see how the pace develops at Williams, but it’s not easy.”

He’s also unlikely to get a lifeline from Red Bull and AlphaTauri who could have a seat opening up within the next few weeks with Nyck de Vries said to be on the chopping block.

The team, though, will most likely go with Daniel Ricciardo or even Liam Lawson as De Vries’ replacement after Helmut Marko categorically made it clear he wouldn’t be signing Schumacher.
