Mick Schumacher pays tribute to his father as Mercedes land a little dig at Haas

Mick Schumacher paid an emotional tribute to his father Michael as he put the seven-time World Champion’s Mercedes W02 through its paces at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

And he did so while wearing his dad’s original race overalls and his iconic red helmet.

The Mercedes reserve driver was in action on Sunday at the annual festival, taking to the track in not one but two of Mercedes’ F1 cars, with the driver opting to fully embrace his father’s 2011 machinery by even wearing Michael’s overalls and helmet.

It was, as Mercedes called it, a “run for the ages” with Schumacher heading up the famous hillclimb in the W02 before putting in the traditional donuts in front of the Goodwood house.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s race, the 24-year-old German said he was thrilled to be able to add the W02 to the collection of his father’s cars that he has the privilege of getting to drive.

“Just experiencing this generation of cars will be mega. Knowing that he raced this car makes it extra special, and there will be many emotions coming with it.

“I have been lucky enough to drive one of his Benetton cars and some of the Ferraris he raced. But this will be the first time behind the wheel of a Mercedes he drove. I am sure I will get out of it with a big smile on my face.”

The W02 was just one of the Mercedes F1 cars that Schumacher got to drive at Goodwood with the German also taking the team’s 2021 W12 for a spin.

With the driver unable to resist another round of donuts, Mercedes’ social media admin had the final word as a photograph of that was posted with the words: “Okay, Mick you can do the donuts now.”

That was a well-aimed dig at the driver’s former team Haas who refused to let him do donuts as his two seasons with the team ended at last year’s Abu Dhabi GP.

“Sorry, Mick. Can you stop these donuts please, seriously? I’m sorry Mick. But we just can’t. Sorry,” he was told with Schumacher replying: “That’s alright. Love you too.”
