Mick Schumacher drives mum Corinna around ice course at Race of Champions

Blasting between snow banks with her silver-medallist son Mick at the wheel,Mrs Schumacher won’t forget the 2023 Race of Champions in a hurry.

It was a memorable, emotional and ultimately successful weekend in Sweden for the Schumacher family, asMick placed second in the individual Champion of Championsevent after partnering close friend and F1 mentor Sebastian Vettel in the Nations’ Cup.

It was the first time a Schumacher had contested the final since 2009, when Mick’s father Michael lost to Swedish motorsport legend Mattias Ekstrom. In a poetic twist, it was Ekstrom who edged the famous German family again 14 years later.

Following the race, Ekstrom and Schumacher Jr recreated a photo of the Swedish driver carrying Michael on his back. The DTM and rallycross champion added: “I had two finals against Michael when I was here, and it was very emotional to race against Mick.

“I know Michael so well, we had so many great battles. I had so many special moments with Michael and I am sure Mick’s time is ahead of him.”

Michael Schumacher was a multi-time winner at the ROC and the weekend was packed with tributes to the seven-time F1 Champion, who has been unable to appear in public since his devastating skiing accident in 2013. Before the event, the competitors gathered to display a banner reading:“Keep fighting Michael – we miss you.”

Michael’s wife Corinna appeared at the event, cheering for her son from the sidelines. Before the action kicked-off, she even got the chance to enjoy some high-speed laps of the Pite Havsbad track, piloted by her son.

“It was the first time we did that,” Mick toldSPORT1. “I first took her out on the ice in the Porsche so she could have that experience, and then we drove the rallycross car as well.

“I think she really enjoyed it. It was a good day, she got to see a bit of what I do for a living.

“It gave her a better understanding of how a weekend like that works and was nice to be able to take her out for a bit. It’s not exactly easy to do that in a Formula 1 car!

“I think she had a lot of fun with it and also got to see what I can do.”

Mick teaming up with Vettel for Team Germany was another nod to the 23-year-old’s father, who put together an incredible run of six consecutive Nations Cup triumphs alongside the former Red Bull and Ferrari driver.

Having been mentored by Michael through his early years in F1, Vettel returned the favour as he and Mick shared the grid for 2021 and 2022.
