Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll has escaped from a huge crash in the closing seconds of Q1 in Singapore Grand Prix qualifying.

The Canadian lost control of his AMR23 at the final turn at the Marina Bay track, with Stroll overcorrecting after touching the kerb on the outside of the corner before the car speared sharply into the barrier.

Such was the energy of the impact that Stroll’s front-left wheel was torn off the car and was sent flying across the track.

Lando Norris, the McLaren driver who was directly behind Stroll on track at the time of the incident, was forced to take avoiding action as the Aston Martin car catapulted back on to the circuit having been launched into the air on impact.

“Lance, car is safe. Are you OK?” Stroll was asked by his race engineer over team radio.

“Yeah, I’m OK,” Stroll replied, before climbing out of the wreckage and walking away. He made his own way to the FIA Medical Car and was cleared after an assessment at the medical centre. Norris was later heard asking his McLaren team if Stroll was OK over team radio.

An Aston Martin statement read: “Lance crashed during qualifying of the Singapore GP. He got out of the car unaided and was taken to the medical centre for a precautionary assessment.

“Lance was cleared by the on-site medical team and returned to the team at track. The Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team pay tribute to ongoing work of the FIA and the safety measures of current F1 cars.”

Stroll was bottom of the timesheets at the time of the crash, with the start of Q2 delayed by roughly 30 minutes by the FIA to clear up fluid which had spilled on to the track surface as well as barrier checks and repairs.

Piastri, Williams driver Logan Sargeant and Alfa Romeo pair Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu were eliminated along with Stroll from Q1.

Stroll’s crash comes amid a difficult run of form for the Canadian, whose seat at Aston Martin has come under growing scrutiny due to his struggles alongside his team-mate, the two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso, in 2023.

The 24-year-old had a particularly rough ride last time out at Monza, where a technical problem in FP2 left him without a lap to his name on Friday after Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin’s reserve driver, competed in his place in FP1. Stroll went on to qualify last for the Italian GP the following day.

Stroll trailed Alonso by 123 points heading into the Singapore GP, with Alonso standing on the podium at exactly half of the 14 races held so far in 2023.

Meanwhile, Stroll has failed to finish higher than fourth this season, with his best result coming in Australia in April.
