Fernando Alonso: Aston Martin ‘don’t make big mistakes, like some of our competitors’

Despite losing third place to Ferrari at Monza, Fernando Alonso says Aston Martin can take encouragement from a season in which they’re “not making big mistakes like some of our competitors”.

快速的块的信gn, Aston Martin struggled to maintain their position as the second quickest team on the grid and, as of Monza, have fallen to fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.

It’s been a notable decline with just two podiums in the last seven races compared to Alonso’s five in the first seven grands prix. He is, however, still sitting P3 in theDrivers’ Championship.

In a season in which momentum has swung between four teams: Aston Martin, Mercedes, Ferrari, and more recently McLaren, Alonso believes the Silverstone team has continued to get the “maximum” from the car week in and week out.

That’s not something his rivals can say with notable mistakes coming from Ferrari on the track while neither the Scuderia nor Mercedes got it right with their 2023 car concepts and had to make major during the season.

That meant that even though Aston Martin are down to fourth in the teams’ standings, Alonso is still holding onto third in the Drivers’ Championship by 14 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

“I think we are doing the job of executing the maximum from the car,” he told the media including PlanetF1.com.

“Sometimes unfortunately it’s ninth, sometimes it’s second.

“We are not doing mistakes. We are doing good strategy, good pit stops, not making big mistakes like some of our competitors, [like] they made at the beginning of the year.

“So we have a good gap in terms of points. But yeah, it’s getting closer, and even Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship, I think, is ahead of us now with this result. Let’s try to bounce back in Singapore.”

Looking ahead to Singapore, a race that he has twice won although his 2008 victory was marred in controversy, Alonso hopesthe street circuit will play to his AMR23’s strengths.

“It will be better than Monza for sure, Singapore,” he said, “but to win a race we know how tough it is with Red Bull being outstanding every Sunday.

“So let’s see if we are one of the contenders for Singapore. I’m not sure.

“I think every weekend seems to change a little bit the order. The last two or three street circuits, Monaco, Alpine was very strong with Esteban P3 in qualifying and the race. In Baku it was Ferrari dominating with Leclerc on pole, so let’s see for Singapore.”
