F1 2023 race results and standings from the Canadian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen made it four wins in a row with Canadian Grand Prix victory, also Red Bull’s 100th win, while it was an eventful outing for both Mercedes drivers.

Verstappen continued his march towards becoming a three-time World Champion with a sixth victory of the season, leading from start to finish at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, though it was not quite the usual level of dominance with his final advantage over Fernando Alonso standing at 9.5 seconds, Alonso having also suffered with rear brake issues.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes escaped punishment over a potential unsafe release also involving Alonso to complete the podium, while George Russell’s recovery mission from an unwanted clattering of the wall met a gutting end.

Verstappen’s victory pursuit started with the perfect getaway, while Alonso’s bullish race plans took an early hit as he dropped behind Hamilton in the Mercedes, though he was able to keep George Russell in the other W14 at bay.

The scene then by Lap 12 remained Alonso pursuing P2-runner Hamilton as Russell kept a close watch, but sliding out of the chicane and giving the wall a hefty whack, Russell was forced to drag his wounded Mercedes back to the pit lane, with Verstappen, Hamilton and Alonso taking the chance to pit for fresh hard tyres as the Safety Car came out.

阿龙so came extremely close to getting the jump on Hamilton in the pit lane, though a little too close as Alonso seemingly was forced to take avoiding action as Hamilton was released from his pit box, an incident noted by the stewards as Russell returned to the race, now P19 and the last of the runners.

阿龙so duly completed the pass on Hamilton come Lap 23 into the final chicane, with the stewards shortly after concluding that no further action would be taken for that potential unsafe release.

A silver lining then for Hamilton, and there was also much-needed positive news on the other side of the Mercedes garage with Russell now back in the top eight with the race past halfway distance.

Russell though could not finish on a high note, as his fantastic recovery effort was cut short by excessive front-left brake wear, forcing him to retire the W14. Alonso was also struggling to keep the rear brakes happy on his Aston Martin, meaning Hamilton smelt an opportunity.

Hamilton though could not make an impression on his former team-mate, instead settling for the final podium spot.
