David Coulthard has hilariously sent in his application to replace Daniel Ricciardo at the Dutch Grand Prix but reserve driver for reserve driver Liam Lawson is the best he can hope for.

Ricciardo is out of the Zandvoort weekend and is potentially facing a six-week injury lay-off after breaking a metacarpal in second practice when he hit the barrier at the banked Turn 3 at pace.

With compatriot Oscar Piastri having just crashed, Ricciardo who was behind him on the track says he had a choice to “either hit him or the wall.”.

‘Dear Christian Horner’, wrote David Coulthard

他与障碍,但他没有have enough time to take my hands off the steering wheel,so the wheel came and hit my hand.”

It meant AlphaTauri need a third different teammate for Yuki Tsunoda for this season with Coulthard applying for the job.

“Dear Christian Horner, please read my PowerPoint for why I should be Daniel’s reserve driver,” read the former Red Bull driver’s post on Instagram.

Entitled ‘Why I should be Daniel’s reserve driver’ by David Coulthard (age 52), it went on to cite his four points.

* I am quick on track
* I did get Red Bull’s first podium
* The engineers and I already get along
* This would make me the 7th oldest ever F1 driver

Horner, despite undoubtedly feeling a bit of frustration and worry over his driver’s wellbeing, ran with Coulthard’s joke.

And surprisingly his response was favourable, sort of.

“Dear DC,” he replied.

“Thank you for your application and despite the significant amount of crash damage at numerous races you created, we might now need a reserve and as the silver fox of the paddock, you would at least make Fernando Alonso feel young again.

“Best wishes Christian”

Unfortunately for Coulthard, Ricciardo’s understudy has already been chosen withLiam Lawson set to make his F1 grand prix debut.

The 21-year-old New Zealander, a Red Bull junior since 2019, will be Tsunoda’s third teammate for this season.
