Dramatic Austrian Grand Prix results change FIVE hours after race
The FIA have examined “well over 1,200” instances of potential track limits breaches during the Austrian Grand Prix, with eight drivers given post-race penalties as a result.
Track limits proved to be a hot-button issue throughout the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, and no fewer than seven drivers were punished with time penalties during the race on Sunday, and eight more were given post-race punishments.
A total of 83 lap times were deleted during the race, with a huge 1,200 instances of potential track limits breaches looked at by the FIA after the race before reaching their conclusions.
Who has been penalised?
The FIA confirmed in a statement that they would be examining each and every potential breach of track limits, and a significant chunk of the grid has now had additional time added to their race time.
But eight drivers have been penalised for multiple breaches, as follows:
- Carlos Sainz – 10 seconds
- Lewis Hamilton – 10 seconds
- Pierre Gasly – 10 seconds
- Alex Albon – 10 seconds
- Esteban Ocon – 30 seconds (combination of 2 x 10-second penalties and 2 x 5-second penalties)
- Logan Sargeant – 10 seconds
- Nyck de Vries – 15 seconds (combination of 10-second and 5-second penalties)
- Yuki Tsunoda – 5 seconds
These penalties are all additional to what has already been served in the Austrian Grand Prix, with several of these drivers having already served in-race punishments.
How have the Austrian Grand Prix results changed?
The podium finishers remain as they were, but below that, it’s all change.
Carlos Sainz drops two places to sixth, moving Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso up into the top five, while Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly also fall down places in the points.
Aston Martin protested the results of the Austrian Grand Prix based on the amount of track limits complaints in the race, and it was upheld – and the results of the FIA’s investigation have gained the team three more Constructors’ Championship points as a result.

Austrian Grand Prix results updated following FIA investigation

“During the Grand Prix, Race Control was tasked with reviewing well over 1,200 instances where a car was reported as potentially leaving the track,” an FIA spokesperson said.
“The results will be updated once the review of those which were not able to be reviewed during the race is complete.
“In order to address the issue for future events we will renew our recommendation to the circuit to add a gravel trap at the exit of Turns 9 and 10.
“We note that while this is not a straightforward solution in relation to other series that race here, it has proved to be very effective at other corners and circuits with similar issues.”
